Inhoud

This course focuses on the (mainly lay) initiatives for forms of religious community as a complement to, or alternative for, the existing Churches from the sixteenth into the early nineteenth century. Although some of these groups mainly offered a combination of conviviality and edification, as the seventeenth century progressed most of them came to embody criticism against the religio-political realities of the ancien régime. The most extreme experimented with alternative forms of communal life, often legitimated through prophetic visions.
